Vietnam Classic

The journey most people mean when they say they want to see Vietnam: the capital, a night on Halong Bay, the imperial city, the lantern town, and the delta where the country runs out into the water. Eleven days, two internal flights, and enough unhurried afternoons that it still feels like a holiday.

Day by day

Day one

Arrive in Hanoi

Met at the airport and driven into the city. The rest of the day is yours — most people walk as far as the lake and no further.

Day two

Hanoi, the short history

Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum (closed Mondays and Fridays), the Temple of Literature, and Hoan Kiem Lake, then the Old Quarter by cyclo through the guild streets.

Breakfast included
Day three

Aboard in Halong Bay

Down to the coast in the morning and onto an overnight junk in the bay — limestone stacks, green water, and the light going gold behind them at dinner.

All meals included
Day four

Halong Bay, then a flight to Hue

A last morning cruising before brunch on board. Ashore, back to Noi Bai, and a short flight south to Hue.

Breakfast included
Day five

Imperial Hue

Thien Mu Pagoda on the Perfume River, the tomb of Tu Duc, and the Citadel itself. The day ends in Dong Ba market, which is loud and worth it.

Breakfast included
Day six

Over the Hai Van Pass to Hoi An

The coast road with stops at Lang Co beach and the Cham Museum in Da Nang, then into Hoi An's old town.

Breakfast included
Day seven

Hoi An

A lantern-making workshop in the morning, the merchant houses and temples on foot, and a slow boat along the Thu Bon in the afternoon.

Breakfast included
Day eight

Flight to Saigon

A morning flight south. The afternoon is free — for the Post Office and the cathedral, or for doing nothing at all.

Breakfast included
Day nine

Cu Chi Tunnels and the city

Out to the tunnel network in the morning, back for the landmarks and Cholon, the old Chinese quarter, in the afternoon.

Breakfast included
Day ten

A day in the Mekong Delta

Down to Ben Tre: workshops along the bank, narrow canals by sampan, and lunch in a family house before driving back.

Breakfast, lunch included
Day eleven

Saigon, and home

Free time until your transfer to the airport.
