Chua Chan Mountain and the La Nga

A cable car, two rivers and a waterfall
Walking country, then the classics
Two weeks that start where most Vietnam itineraries never go: the terraced valleys of Mu Cang Chai, two days of walking at a real gradient, a highland market, and only then the bay, the imperial cities and the delta. Trails are graded and none of them require a climber.
Day by day
Met on arrival and taken to your hotel, with the rest of the day at leisure.
The Temple of Literature, the One Pillar Pagoda and the Flag Tower, then the Museum of Ethnology (closed Mondays) and a walk through the 36 streets.
Through Nghia Lo and up to the Khau Pha Pass, with an hour's walk to Lim Thai village above the terraces. Dinner and the night at the lodge.
Six kilometres to My Hang through the terraces in the morning, lunch at the lodge, then an easier five through the Ngoc Chien valley among Black Thai and Flower Hmong hamlets.
North through the mountains, stopping at the highest pass in the country. Lunch in Sapa, then a free afternoon — Fansipan by cable car, or the walk to Lao Chai and Ta Van.
An early drive to whichever market is running that day — Can Cau on Saturday, Bac Ha on Sunday, Coc Ly on Tuesday, Lung Phinh on Friday — then back to Hanoi after lunch.
To the coast and onto an overnight boat, with lunch and dinner on deck.
A final morning cruising and brunch aboard, then the flight south.
The Citadel and the Minh Mang mausoleum in the morning, then the Hai Van Pass and into Hoi An late afternoon.
A guided morning through a lantern workshop, the Phuc Kien hall, the Japanese Bridge, the market and the old houses. The afternoon is free.
To Da Nang airport and south. Check in, and the rest of the day is yours.
To Cai Thia, then bicycles along the canal and a walk through the mango village at Hoa Loc. Rice paper made and tasted, a cruise to An Binh, then rowing boats into the creeks. You help cook dinner at the homestay.
A morning walk round the island, a tile factory by boat, then Sa Dec — the flower village and the Huynh Thuy Le house of Duras's novel — before driving back to the city.
The cathedral, the Post Office and the Independence Palace, then Cholon and Ben Thanh market. Free time until your flight.
