The same valley, from a lodge built on a ridge with nothing else in sight. Two nights at Topas, a long day's walk down to Nam Cang through Red Dao country, and a market on the way home.
Day by day
Day one
To the lodge, and two villages by bike
Up via Lao Cai with lunch on the road. In the afternoon, cycle to Lech, a Red Dao village, into a family house, and on to Ban Moi for the embroidery.

Day two
Sin Chai to Nam Cang on foot
Driven to the trailhead, then a day's walk through mountains, terraces and Red Dao hamlets, stopping at homes and workshops in Nam Nhiu and Nam Cang. Lunch with a local family.

Day three
A market, then Hanoi
Coc Ly on Tuesday, Can Cau on Saturday, Bac Ha on Sunday — Flower Hmong, Phu La and Dao Tuyen trading — then the drive back.
