The two things most visitors to Saigon want to see, done properly in one long day rather than two rushed halves. Underground at Ben Dinh in the morning, on the water at Ben Tre by the afternoon.
Highlights
- Crawl a section of the Ben Dinh tunnel network
- The Hoang Cam kitchen, which vented smoke where nobody would look
- A hand-rowed sampan through the coconut canals
- Coconut candy made in front of you, local fruit and honey tea
- Southern folk music — don ca tai tu, on the UNESCO list since 2013
- A short ride through the village lanes by bicycle
Itinerary
Morning: the tunnels at Ben Dinh · Lunch included
An hour and a quarter out of the city. A short film, then your guide takes you through the network — how people lived down there, cooked, and got word to each other. Crawl a stretch if you want to, and try the cassava they lived on.
Afternoon: Ben Tre and the delta
Lunch, then bicycles along the village roads and a rowing boat into the small channels. A coconut-candy workshop, fruit from the garden, folk music from local artists, and honey tea at a bee farm before the boat back to My Tho.
